The Harris School (THS), originally
called The Child Development Center (CDC), was begun in 1987 by The Houston-Galveston
Psychoanalytic Institute (HGPI) with a generous grant from a donor. The child psychoanalyst
faculty of the HGPI worked diligently in outreach programs to form the basis of the school,
and with the generosity of several Houston foundations and other donors they were able to
bring The Harris School to physical reality with a groundbreaking in 1993. Although The Harris
School is no longer affiliated with HGPI, the mission of
The Harris School continues to be the improvement of the educational development and the
emotional health of children. This is achieved by using psychodynamic
and psychoanalytic principles in our therapeutic school,
in professional consultations with educators and parents through our
outreach and teacher training (The Outreach/ Teacher Consultant Program),
in evaluation of children (The THS Clinic), and in training and research
in child development (The Professional Training Programs). The children,
with the help of their families, mental health professionals, and teachers,
can grow to be competent, responsible, and successful.
