The mission of The Harris School is to support the educational and emotional development of children and their families. It was named after a board member, outstanding contributor, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, Hunter Harris, M.D., who joined the Board of the school in 1994. Parents seek the help of our school when their child's normal course of development is temporarily affected or interrupted by such stressors as speech and language delays, limited social interactions, and lingering anxiety or sadness due to illness, death, or other family issues. These difficulties can sometimes result in inappropriate behaviors at home and at school that mask the child's ultimate potential. We also help when children's neurological or psychological difficulties (such as Asperger's, ADHD, bipolar illness, OCD) interfere with their ability to succeed in typical classrooms. National research indicates that children possessing above average intelligence are more likely to experience emotional difficulties because they have not yet gained mastery over the complicated feelings stirred up by their precocious intellects. Our school provides an avenue for gifted and talented children to learn ways of employing their considerable intellectual abilities in an academically challenging and personally fulfilling manner. With the help of our school, children are restored to their normal level of development and typically enter mainstream education at Houston's finest private and public schools.

At The Harris School, our teachers provide the highest caliber education in a caring and supportive environment for the children. The parents of every student are assigned to a Family Consultant, a highly skilled mental health professional, who meets with the parents weekly to help them focus on the inner life of their child. Family Consultants are present in the classroom, observing students on a regular basis. The feedback from these observations is discussed with the teachers weekly to provide them with the best possible information for effectively dealing with the individual academic and social needs of each child. This collaborative effort between parents, Family Consultants and teachers is the ultimate means of helping our children attain their full potential for themselves, their families, and society.

  • A specialized curriculum for bright children in pre-K through grade 8 whose emotional and social development has not yet caught up to their precocious intellects
  • A low student:teacher ratio which permits a highly individualized curriculum
  • Early intervention and prevention of a lifetime of difficulties
  • Integration of all aspects of children’s development -- intellectual, emotional, social, and physical
  • Support for parents with life's most important job - being a parent – with weekly individual sessions and/or biweekly parenting groups with a Family Consultant who is a trained mental health professional
  • Weekly in-service training for teachers with Family Consultants
  • Bimonthly meetings of teachers, Family Consultants, and M.D. and Ph.D. staff members providing on-going assessment of pupils' progress

In recognition of the difference our school has made in their lives, our students affectionately refer to The Harris School as "THE HELPING SCHOOL” -- a nickname of which we are proud and which guides all of us in this unique school.
