Harris School
classrooms sometimes serve as "resource rooms" for children
who continue to be enrolled and spend part of their day in the referring
school. In such cases, spending part of the day in The Harris
School provides the extra support and structure the child needs to benefit
from the hours spent at the sending school. Teachers in the two
schools maintain regular contact, often by means of a daily journal
that follows the child back and forth. This enables teachers in
both schools to provide consistent structure and guidance for the child,
as well as to keep him or her on track academically with peers. In
time, children in this joint venture are expected to be able to return
full-time to the referring school. The transition back is simplified
since students have maintained their enrollment at that site throughout
the time The Harris School served as a temporary support system.Children enrolled exclusively at The Harris School are helped to transition to a mainstream school using many of the same strategies. Once a child has been admitted to a new school for the following term, Harris School teachers will implement the curriculum of the receiving school as much as possible, particularly for reading and mathematics. Harris School teachers are ready to visit with the new teacher and classroom even before the child enters to help him or her prepare for the change. Even after the child begins his or her new school, Harris School teachers are always available to the new teacher by phone. Harris School parents continue to be supported by the Family Consultant program for as long as that service is viewed as helpful by the parent.
